Confession of a suspected killer • I didn’t know my boss’s fiancee ‘ll die after my friend and I strangulated her

The late Chiamaka Ebirim and The suspect, Olakunle Rasheed

When the February 24 edition of Sunday Tribune published the story of a 23-year-old 200 level student of Imo State University, Chiamaka Ebirim, who was murdered at Ojoo area of Ibadan while she came to visit her fiance, the security guard employed by Chiamaka’s heartthrob was fingered as the perpetrator of the dastardly act, moreso that he ran away after the incident.

However, nemesis has taught the suspect, Olakunle Rasheed (25), that he could only run but would not be able to hide from justice forever.  The blood of the murdered girl must have cried out for revenge as Rasheed had been arrested by the Oyo state Police Command, and had even confessed to causing Chiamaka’s death.

The young man was reportedly arrested on March 17 from his hideout at Molete area. Investigations also revealed that he and his friend, Abdulahi, who is currently at large, conspired to kill the varsity student because of a radiator valued at N80,000 but which they eventually sold for N25,000!
Before his transfer to State Crminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku and subsequent arraignment at Magistrate’s Court 7, Iyaganku on Friday, March 22, Crime Reports was at Ojoo Division to interview the suspect. Below is his confession:

“My father is from Gumi in Sokoto State but my mother is a Yoruba woman. My father got married to other women and my mother is also married to another Hausa man and is in the north. I attended primary school in the South West but went to Gayari Secondary School in Tsafe Local Government, Zamfara State.

“I was at Tai Solarin University of Education but left in 2008 while in 200 level. I could still remember my matric number, it was 2005/0103256. My father was paying my school fees then and I also used to work as a bricklayer to get some money to spend on myself. When I got to 200 level, my father could no longer afford to pay my school fees because he had stroke and was bedridden. I could not go to my mother because her husband did not like me. That was how I left school.

“I came back to Ibadan and started working with Aunty Laide Frozen Foods, Idi Odo, Challenge. After a few months, I left for the North again. When I came back to Ibadan, I went to work with an Igbo man popularly called Dangote as a security man. I was with him for about a year when I heard that my father was seriously ill again. I went to him and spent some months there taking care of him with the little I had.

“By the time I returned to Ibadan, my boss, Dangote had already employed another person. I was told to exercise some patience because the employee was not expected to stay long. Along the line, one of Dangote’s boys told me that there was an Igbo man called Nonso who just moved into his personal residence but was being troubled by armed robbers and burglars. He said I should go and work for him and I agreed. That was in December 2012.

“My boss said he would be paying me N15,000, but I was earning N20,000 at Dangote’s company. I also learnt that the salary was increased to N25,000 while I was away. Mr Nonso however told me that I would be working for 12 hours unlike where the 24-hour job I was doing with Dangote.
I started work on December 9 and he paid me full salary.

“He did not have a deep well in his compound so he asked me to be helping him to fetch water. I told him to add N5,000 to my salary and he agreed. He also had an undeveloped plot of land which I helped him to clear of weeds. When  January ended, he gave me N15,000. By then, I had already calculated how I was going to spend my salary, as I wanted to rent a room then.

“I had a friend called Abdulahi popularly called Dan Gusau. He used to sell cigarettes. We used to relax together after close of work. When I told him of my experience with my boss, he was not happy with Oga Nonso, saying that I should leave the house because being a security man was no job. He promised to help me be on the lookout for a better job.

“On February 7, we were together before I went to work. He called me in the afternoon to know if I was in my master’s house. After confirming that, he came to meet me and saw a radiator in the house. He said I was not bold enough, wondering why I was looking at money without making a grab for it. I told him to take it so that we could sell, after which we would travel to the north together.

“As he took the radiator, my boss’s fiancee came out of the house to send me on an errand. I was afraid that she would raise the alarm so I rushed towards her and held her hands. She started shouting so Abdulahi went to the backyard and took a rope. We tied her hands and neck and dragged her to the visitors’ toilet. She was struggling on the floor but could no longer shout. We left the house but never knew she would die.

“We took the lady’s two phones, shoes, clothings and the radiator. We shared the two phones between ourselves. I took the Techno phone while Abdulahi took Nokia. We went to Molete where I sold the Techno phone for N1,000. Abdulahi took me to a place at Idi Odo, Ehin Grammar where we kept the radiator.   I saw one Kunle whom I told that I had a radiator to sell. He helped us to sell it for N25,000 and we gave him N5,000 while we shared the remaining N20,000 equally.

“When Oga Nonso called me, I told him that I had gone far, and that I had been told so much about him. He said his fiancee was dead but I replied that I was not concerned with that, though I also said that it was not possible. When the Serikin Sasa called me, I told him I had gone to the North, that I would see him when I return, but I did not go to him.

“On Sunday March 17, I went to Molete where Kunle told me that his brother had been arrested. We dragged the issue and I was told to follow him. I was taken to Mapo police station from where Ojoo Division came to pick me. I started smoking hemp about two years ago when I started sleeping in parks at Ojoo”.

Rasheed is currently in prison custody at Agodi, Ibadan and his case adjourned the case till April 25 for further hearing.

It will be recalled that Chiamaka’s family initially suspected Nonso in having a hand in their daughter’s death. Some were even said to have insinuated that he probably used her for money ritual.

However, Rasheed’s arrest has put all that to rest, just as a representative of Chiamaka’s family, Chief Ebere appealed to the government to ensure that justice is done over the untimely death of their daughter.
